Breast Management in Sarasota Florida

David Napoliello, MD has a broad experience in Breast Surgery and has been performing surgery on the breast for over 20 years. He is actually one of the few surgeons who actually participated in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) research studies in the 1990's that actually defines how breast surgery is now performed across the country today.  Although some practitioners may choose only to perform breast surgery and define themselves a "breast surgeon," few have the experience and expertise of Dr. Napoliello.

Breast Screening

Concerns for the breast may include a suspicious radiological screening study such as a mammogram or ultrasound, nipple discharge or a palpable lump.  An abnormal study would warrant a referral to a surgeon by your primary physician.  If you palpate a lump on the breast or notice abnormal discharge, bring this to the attention of your primary physician immediately.  Alternatively, you may consider contacting a surgeon directly if your insurance allows.

Breast Surgery

Breast surgery includes minimally invasive biopsies such as Fine Needle Aspirates or Percutaneous Biopsies (larger biopsy device), open excisional biopsies, lumpectomies, mastectomy and axillary lymph node sampling.  Most are performed as an outpatient with the exception of mastectomy.

Breast Biopsies

Breast biopsies are performed to gain a diagnosis.  If the sample is benign, this completes the management of the breast with exception of future surveillance.  If a diagnosis confirms a cancer, management with either lumpectomy (breast conservation) versus mastectomy is discussed in detail with each patient.
